Electric Trucks Buying Guide
Torque: Where Electric Trucks Dominate
Electric motors produce maximum torque from a standstill — a fundamental advantage for work trucks. The Ford F-150 Lightning delivers 775 lb-ft of torque, available instantly. The Rivian R1T produces 908 lb-ft. Compared to diesel competitors, electric trucks pull with more authority at lower speeds, making them genuinely better work tools for towing from a dead stop.
Real-World Range When Towing
This is the critical caveat for electric truck buyers: towing cuts range dramatically. The F-150 Lightning Extended Range is rated 320 miles unloaded — but tow a 6,000 lb trailer at highway speeds and real-world range drops to roughly 100–130 miles. Plan charging stops accordingly on road trips with a trailer. Towing is where the charging network matters most; Tesla's Supercharger accessibility gives the Cybertruck a meaningful advantage on long towing trips.
Pro Power and Vehicle-to-Load
One of the most practical innovations in electric trucks is built-in power export. The F-150 Lightning's Pro Power Onboard provides up to 9.6 kW of 120/240V power — enough to run job site tools, power a tailgate, or keep your home running during an outage. The Rivian R1T similarly offers camp-ready power output. This capability doesn't exist in traditional trucks and adds real utility.
Payload vs. Battery Weight Trade-off
Battery packs are heavy — the F-150 Lightning's Extended Range battery weighs roughly 1,800 lbs alone. This reduces maximum payload capacity compared to gas counterparts. The Lightning's max payload is 2,000 lbs vs. 3,250 lbs for the gas F-150. If maximum payload is critical for your work, compare these numbers carefully against your typical loads before purchasing.
